Planning

The first step to an assault is to plan your attack. A few considerations:

  1. What units should you use? Most of the time, you can just attack with the units you already have built. This is ideal because you don't need to wait for different units to build. But particularly difficult bases might require you to build special units to be successful.

  2. What hero should you use? Different heroes are more effective against different base layouts and turret compositions. For example, Dray or Saul are great against forward base configurations. Easy bases can be a good opportunity to level up a lower-level hero that you are building up. For hard bases, you probably want to deploy one of your best heroes to ensure victory.

  3. How will you use your starting energy? You might want to destroy or disable key turrets. You might want to draw out the hero and kill it.

  4. What order will you deploy your troops in? When using a mix of unit types, consider deploying the ones with more health first, and the ones with more damage per second (dps) last. If your units with more health go into battle first, they can soak up a lot of turret fire, protecting your high-dps units. Try to time it so the high-dps units arrive at the front line right after the high health units. If they arrive too late, your high health units will take extra damage for nothing. You'll need to put each unit type on its own control group to deploy them separately.

Note: Beware of turrets that target units that are farther away when using this strategy (e.g. Whirlwinds or Beamers).

  5. What angle should you attack from? For example, you may be able go up the right side of the base and completely avoid the turrets on the left side. If you are using a teleporting hero, decide where you plan to teleport him and when. If your hero has stealth, decide what high-value target he should prioritize.

Example: the left half of this base can be completely ignored.

Tip: You don't need to destroy all the turrets to win, you only need to destroy the HQ. Sometimes it's best to focus down the HQ, ignoring active turrets nearby. Other times you can run past the turrets to get to the HQ and attack it out of range of the turrets. This is especially true on a number of NPC bases that are very spread out. Heroes that teleport your army (Ezekyle or Horus) can also be valuable to bypass turrets that are not in range of the HQ. If you are running past turrets, try to haywire or dominate them to protect your troops.

Example: units can bypass the turrets on this base and attack the HQ without drawing any fire, since the HQ is out of range for all the turrets.
